2008 Midi Music Festival Postponed for the Third Time

According to Midi School BBS, the 2008 Midi Music Festival has been postponed for the 3rd time. Rock fans have to wait for another 10 days after the golden week holidays.

Organizers say the main reason for the delay is that the Olympic Sports Center Stadium will not be available for the festival during the golden week, instead it will be open to the public as a tourist attraction expecting millions of visitors from domestic and overseas. Even if the festival proceeds according to schedule at the organizers’ request, the 700,000 RMB/day cost for the newly installed security equipments and inspection devices will make it impossible for them to break even.

Surprisingly, officials from the Ministry of Culture, Police Department, and Haidian Park Administration are being supportive in changing the site to Haidian Park, where the festival went to public and commercial for the first time in 2005.

Midi Music Festival started as an internal and underground festival held within Midi Music School. It soon kicked off to become one of the best commercial outdoor music festivals in China. Comparing with Chaoyang Music Festival, another major music festival held annually by the Ministry of Culture, Midi Music Festival is more open and certainly has got less security guards (who would ask you to be quiet and not to jump at Chaoyang Music Festival).

I remember when I was studying in Stirling Uni in Scotland 4 years ago, one of the officials from the Student TV Production Society was so amazed that we have Rock n’ Roll in China. I still recall his contemptuous smile.

Yes, we have it. And lots of it!

Watch this video Let’s Marry in 2008 made during the Olympic Torch Relay, in which the message said the festival was going to be held 100 days before the games.
